Six Taiwan banks could open branches on the mainland as early as next month. They've already received approval from the Taiwan Financial Authority, and are now are awaiting approval from the mainland's Banking regulatory commission.

If successful, their existing offices in the mainland will become branches. But the Taiwan banks won't be allowed to process Renminbi deposits or lending within the first year.
